How to Set Up Markup in Products & Services
In this article, you'll learn how to create markup values, assign default markup to products and services, and use markup in Proposal Generator quote sections.
Overview
The Markup feature in Products & Services allows admins to create preset markup values and assign them to products or services used in proposal quotes.
Markup can be added as either a percentage or a fixed dollar amount. When a product or service has a default markup assigned, that markup can automatically appear when the item is added to a quote in the Proposal Generator.
This helps teams standardize pricing while still allowing users to adjust or remove markup before sending the proposal.
Step-by-Step Instructions
🧭 1. Open Proposal Settings
- Click your name in the top-right corner.
- Select Company Settings.
- Click Proposal Settings.
- Open the Product & Services tab.

💵 2. Review the Markup Column
In the Product & Services table, review the Markup column.
The Markup column shows whether a product or service has a default markup value assigned.
If the column is blank, that item does not have a default markup.
If a markup value appears, that value can automatically load when the product or service is added to a proposal quote.

A percentage markup increases the line item amount by a percentage.
Example:
A 15% markup on a $1,000 line item adds $150.
A fixed amount markup adds a flat dollar amount.
Example:
A $50 fixed markup adds $50 to the line item.
🧾 5. Assign Default Markup to a Product or Service
- Return to the Product & Services tab.
- Add a new product/service or edit an existing one.
- Find the Default Markup field.
- Select the markup value you want to use.
- Click Save.

Default markup is optional. Not every product or service needs a default markup value.
🧱 6. Use Markup in the Quote Builder
When a product or service with default markup is added to a proposal quote, the markup value can appear automatically in the quote line item.
If no default markup is assigned, the Markup field may remain blank or show Please Select.
Users can:
- Keep the default markup
- Choose a different markup value
- Leave markup blank
- Remove or clear markup if it should not apply

👁️ 7. Show or Hide the Markup Column
In the quote builder, users can use the Show/Hide Fields option to show or hide the Markup column.
- Open the quote section.
- Click the gear icon.
- Open Show/Hide Fields.
- Check or uncheck Markup.

If users do not want the Markup column to appear on the final quote, they should hide the Markup field before generating the review PDF.
🔍 8. Review the Quote Before Sending
Before sending the proposal, review:
- Products and services
- Markup values
- Quote line amounts
- Subtotal
- Tax
- Total
- Whether the Markup column should appear on the client-facing quote
Generate a review PDF to confirm the quote displays correctly before sending it to the client.
Result
After completing these steps, admins will have created markup values, assigned default markup to products or services, and made those markup options available for use in Proposal Generator quote sections.
Best Practices
✅ Create standard markup values first
Set up common percentage or fixed amount markup values before assigning them to products and services.
✅ Use default markup only when needed
Default markup is optional. Leave it blank for products or services that should not automatically include markup.
✅ Review quote totals carefully
Markup increases the quote amount. Always review subtotals, taxes, and totals before sending a proposal.
✅ Confirm what the client should see
Use Show/Hide Fields to control whether the Markup column appears on the final quote.
✅ Generate a review PDF before sending
Always review the proposal PDF to confirm markup displays correctly.
✅ Keep markup values simple
Use clear, easy-to-understand markup values so users can select the correct option quickly.
